PCOS supplements
PCOS is the condition where a supplement comes closest to earning its place, because insulin resistance sits underneath so much of it. Here is what has evidence and what does not.
The context.
PCOS affects roughly one in ten women of reproductive age and is driven, in a large proportion of cases, by insulin resistance. That gives a supplement an actual mechanism to work with, which is unusual in this field.
Inositol is the standout. Trials show improved insulin sensitivity and more regular cycles at 4g of myo-inositol daily, and comparisons with metformin suggest similar metabolic benefit with fewer gut side effects. It takes three to six months, not three weeks.
Almost everything else marketed for PCOS - berberine aside, which needs its own clinical conversation - is either supporting a nutrient gap or riding on the inositol data.

Prices are the brand's UK list price at the time of writing and change often. Cost per day is calculated from pack size and the label's daily serving, and is shown only where both are published.
What to look for.
- 4g of myo-inositol per daily serving
- This is the dose used in the trials. Capsule products often deliver a fraction of it, which is why powder is usually the better buy.
- A 40:1 myo to D-chiro ratio
- This mirrors the physiological plasma ratio and is what current trials use. D-chiro-heavy products are not an upgrade.
- Folic acid if you might conceive
- Many PCOS-specific products include it, which is sensible given how often PCOS and fertility planning overlap.
What to ignore.
- 'PCOS detox' and hormone-balancing teas
- There is nothing to detox and no tea that alters androgen production.
- Weight loss claims
- Inositol may support metabolic markers, but selling it as a weight loss product misrepresents the evidence.
- Products without a stated myo-inositol weight
- If the label hides the dose behind a blend name, you cannot dose it properly.
The ingredients, one by one.
Inositol
The most defensible supplement in PCOS. Give it three months, and treat it as support alongside clinical care.
Vitamin D and K2
Vitamin D is a genuine UK public health recommendation. K2 is reasonable, optional and oversold.
Omega-3
Worth taking if you rarely eat oily fish, and genuinely important in pregnancy. Not a mood treatment on its own.
Magnesium glycinate
Genuinely useful if you are low in magnesium or sleeping badly. Not a sedative, and not a cure for anxiety.
When a supplement is not the answer
PCOS needs a diagnosis, and it needs monitoring. Irregular or absent periods, unexplained weight change, significant acne or hair growth, difficulty conceiving, or a family history of type 2 diabetes all warrant a proper assessment rather than a supplement bought on the basis of a symptom checklist. Long-term, PCOS raises metabolic risk, and that is managed clinically.
Speak to a clinician about PCOSCommon questions.
What is the best supplement for PCOS?
Myo-inositol has the most trial evidence, typically 4g daily with 100mg D-chiro-inositol. Vitamin D is worth correcting if you are low.
How long do PCOS supplements take to work?
Metabolic markers can move in eight to twelve weeks; cycle regularity usually takes three to six months. Judge it at three months.
Can supplements cure PCOS?
No. Nothing cures PCOS. Inositol and lifestyle changes can meaningfully improve insulin sensitivity and cycle regularity, which improves symptoms.
Is inositol as good as metformin?
Some trials show comparable metabolic effects with fewer side effects, but it is not a straight substitute and prescribed metformin should not be stopped without medical advice.
