    PMDD supplements

PMDD is a severe, cyclical mood disorder, not bad PMS. Supplements can support it. They do not treat it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

    The context.

PMDD affects an estimated 3 to 8% of menstruating women and involves severe mood symptoms in the luteal phase that lift within days of a period starting. At its worst it is disabling and carries a genuine suicide risk. That framing matters before any conversation about supplements.

The nutrient with the most PMS trial support is calcium, where several studies show reduced symptom scores at around 1,000-1,200mg daily. Magnesium, often paired with B6, has smaller supporting trials for fluid retention and premenstrual anxiety. Omega-3 has some data for mood and period pain.

None of this was studied in PMDD specifically at a scale that would justify calling it treatment. Use it as support while you get proper care, and track your cycle so you and a clinician can see the pattern.

    What to look for.

B6 at 50-100mg and no higher
Above this, taken long term, B6 can cause nerve damage. Add up every product you take, including your multivitamin.
    Magnesium in a well-absorbed form
Glycinate for evening use; oxide is poorly absorbed and mostly a laxative.
Something you can take through the luteal phase only
Several of these can be taken cyclically rather than daily, which lowers cost and total exposure.

    What to ignore.

Anything marketed as a PMDD cure
There is no over-the-counter cure. A product making that claim is one you should not trust on anything else either.
    High-dose B6 'mood' formulas
More B6 is not better and carries a real neuropathy risk.

When a supplement is not the answer

If your premenstrual weeks involve rage, despair, or thoughts of harming yourself, that is PMDD territory and it deserves treatment, not a capsule. Cycle tracking over two to three months plus a proper assessment is the route in. SSRIs used continuously or in the luteal phase, some hormonal approaches and structured psychological support all have real evidence behind them. Common questions.

    What supplements help PMDD?

Calcium has the most PMS trial support, with smaller studies behind magnesium, vitamin B6 at 50-100mg and omega-3. None of these treat PMDD itself.

Can supplements replace SSRIs for PMDD?

No. SSRIs have far stronger evidence in PMDD, including when taken only in the luteal phase. Supplements are support alongside treatment.

Should I take supplements all month or only before my period?

Several, including B6 and magnesium, can be taken through the luteal phase only. Calcium is usually taken daily. Discuss the pattern with a clinician if you are tracking symptoms.
