    The market right now

Independent prescribing has changed the economics of women's health services. A nurse prescriber can assess, treat and review a menopause or contraception caseload end to end, which is why demand for the qualification has outpaced the number of nurses holding it.

Advanced nurse practitioner roles now routinely pay at or above NHS Band 8a in the independent sector, and the recruitment argument is rarely about pay. Caseload caps, supervision quality and scope clarity are what move experienced ANPs between employers.

Specialist nursing in fertility and sexual health is a smaller market but a stable one, with roles concentrated in London and the larger cities. FSRH Letters of Competence for coil and implant fitting materially increase what a sexual health nurse can command.

Remote and hybrid patterns are now normal for review and titration work, though examination, LARC fitting and first consultations generally stay in person.

    Frequently asked questions

How much do nurse prescribers earn in the UK?

Independent nurse prescribers typically earn £45,000 to £60,000, sitting at the top of NHS Band 7 or into Band 8a. Specialist menopause and women's health prescribing roles cluster at £48,000 to £58,000.

What qualification do I need to prescribe as a nurse?

NMC registration plus a recorded independent or supplementary prescribing qualification (V300). You need at least one year of post-registration experience before starting the course, and most employers ask for two or more in the relevant specialty.

What is the difference between an ANP and a nurse prescriber?

A nurse prescriber holds the prescribing qualification. An advanced nurse practitioner holds MSc-level advanced practice covering assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment, usually including prescribing. ANP is the broader role and pays more.

Do I need FSRH competencies for sexual health nursing?

Not always to start, but LARC Letters of Competence significantly widen what you can do and what you can earn. Good employers fund the training and mentor the supervised fittings.

Can nurse prescribing roles be remote?

Review and titration clinics work well remotely, and ours are. Initial assessment, examination and any procedural work stay in person.

    What supervision should I expect?

A named supervising clinician available in real time on clinic days, plus formal monthly supervision. If an employer cannot describe their supervision arrangement precisely, treat that as a warning.
