Midwifery and maternity jobs in the UK

The UK midwifery workforce shortage is not a recruitment problem, it is a retention problem. Surveys consistently find that midwives leave over shift patterns, caseload size and the inability to give women proper time, rather than over pay.

That has created a distinct market for daytime, community and clinic-based midwifery outside intrapartum care: antenatal education, postnatal recovery, infant feeding and continuity models. Pay is broadly comparable to NHS Band 6 base, with unsocial hours enhancements traded for sleep.

Postnatal care is the clearest gap. NHS provision effectively ends at the six week check, while pelvic floor dysfunction, iron depletion, thyroid change and mood disorder commonly present between three and twelve months. Services filling that window are hiring midwives, health visitors, physiotherapists and sonographers together.

Sonography is the acute scarcity within this group. Persistent vacancy rates have pushed both NHS recruitment premia and independent salaries well above the equivalent Agenda for Change band.
