The market right now
The bottleneck in private therapy is not demand, it is caseload reliability. Clinicians who leave the NHS for independent practice usually lose three to six months to marketing, intake and billing before their diary fills. Network roles remove that by routing referrals directly.
Rates in this market range from around £60 an hour for accredited CBT delivery to £150 an hour or more for specialist assessment and formulation work. What moves a clinician up that range is a defined specialism - neurodevelopmental, perinatal, trauma or health psychology - rather than general practice.
Almost all of this work is now delivered by video, which is why clinicians outside London can access London rates without relocating.

Independent clinical psychologists typically charge £100 to £140 an hour. With a filled caseload and no self-generated marketing overhead that equates to roughly £70,000 to £90,000 a year, and more with supervision or medico-legal work.
Do I need BABCP accreditation for CBT roles?
For CBT-specific roles, yes. Accreditation, or being close enough to it that you are in the final stages, is what allows the work to be described as accredited CBT to patients and insurers.
Can I hold a private caseload alongside an NHS post?
Yes. You set your own weekly hours and can pause intake at any point. Most therapists here start at four to eight sessions a week.
Is indemnity cover included?
No, clinicians hold their own professional indemnity as independent practitioners. We check it is current at onboarding and at annual review.
