Why this role exists
Perinatal mental health services are rationed to the most severe presentations, which leaves a large group of women with genuine trauma and no route to treatment. Six months of untreated birth trauma changes how a woman parents, works and decides about future pregnancy.
Who you would be looking after
Women in pregnancy and the first two years after birth, including after traumatic birth, loss, neonatal intensive care, and severe hyperemesis.
A day in the diary
- Five to six 60 minute sessions a day, or four plus a formulation slot
- EMDR or trauma-focused CBT blocks where indicated
- Direct liaison with midwifery and the medical team
- Monthly perinatal MDT case discussion
What the work involves
- Assess, formulate and treat perinatal trauma, loss and adjustment difficulty
- Deliver trauma-focused therapy including EMDR where you hold the training
- Advise the wider team on how to work with women who are frightened of clinical settings
- Contribute to the perinatal pathway design
What we ask for
- HCPC registration as a clinical or counselling psychologist
- Perinatal experience and trauma-focused competence
- Comfort working with pregnancy loss

What this pays, and why
NHS Band 8a psychology equates to roughly £38 to £43 an hour. Independent practice runs £100 to £160 a session, but with acquisition and admin taken out of it. Our band is what remains once neither of those costs is yours.

Is EMDR training required?
Not required, but valued. If you hold it you will use it. If not, trauma-focused CBT is the alternative route.
How much in-person work is there?
Around one day a week in London if you want it, otherwise fully remote is workable.
Do you take severe or high-risk presentations?
We hold moderate presentations and refer high-risk and psychotic presentations into NHS perinatal services, with a written escalation policy.
