What moves the number
- Specialist accreditation in a model that services actually commission, particularly perinatal, trauma and neurodiversity.
- Supervision and training responsibility, which is what usually justifies the step from 8a to 8b.
- Insurer recognition, which raises both the rate and the volume of private referrals.
- Assessment work. Structured diagnostic assessment sessions are paid at a premium against therapy hours.
- Mixing NHS security with a small private caseload, which is how most psychologists in this field lift total earnings.
Why women's health pays differently
Perinatal mental health, PMDD and adult ADHD in women are all commissioned faster than services can staff them. Psychologists who can hold hormonal context alongside a psychological formulation, rather than treating mood in isolation, are scarce and are being paid at the top of the private range.

Common questions
- How much do clinical psychologists earn in the UK?
- Newly qualified NHS psychologists start at Band 7, roughly £46,148 to £52,809. Experienced psychologists sit at Band 8a and above. Private session rates are typically £90 to £160 an hour.
- Are trainee clinical psychologists paid?
- Yes. Doctorate trainees on NHS-funded places are employed and paid at Band 6 throughout the three years, with tuition covered.
- Can clinical psychologists earn more in private practice?
- Per hour, clearly. A full private caseload can exceed a Band 8a salary, but you carry indemnity, marketing, admin, no pension and no guaranteed volume.
