When a supplement is not the answer
Bacterial vaginosis, thrush and trichomoniasis feel similar and are treated completely differently. New discharge with an odour, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, or symptoms after a new partner should be assessed, not self-treated. Sexual health clinics test and treat quickly and free. A probiotic is a reasonable addition after diagnosis, and a poor substitute for one.
Speak to a clinicianQuestions people ask.
- Which vaginal probiotics should I buy?
- Vaginal probiotics aim to support Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal flora. The strains with the most evidence are Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14, studied mainly as an adjunct to standard treatment for bacterial vaginosis to reduce recurrence. Benefits are strain-specific, so an unnamed strain at a high CFU count is not an upgrade.
- How is cost per day calculated?
- We divide the brand's UK list price by the number of days a pack lasts, using the pack size and the daily serving printed on the label. Where a brand does not publish both numbers we leave the figure blank rather than estimate it.
- Are these products ranked or paid placements?
- No. The table is ordered alphabetically and nobody pays to appear in it. We do not hold ratings, accreditations or trial results for individual products, so we do not publish any.
- Can I take more than one of these together?
- Often yes, but check the total dose of any nutrient that appears in more than one product, and check interactions with your medication with a pharmacist first. Iron in particular should only be taken when a blood test shows you need it.
- Which probiotic strains work for vaginal health?
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 have the most supporting data, mainly for reducing bacterial vaginosis recurrence alongside standard treatment.
- Do vaginal probiotics stop thrush?
- The evidence is weaker for thrush than for bacterial vaginosis. Recurrent thrush needs proper assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
- Oral or vaginal probiotics?
- Both routes have been studied for GR-1 and RC-14. Oral is easier to stick with and has reasonable supporting data.
