    Collagen for menopause

Skin collagen falls sharply in the years around menopause. A collagen drink does not reverse that, but the trials do show something. Here is the honest size of it.

    The context.

Women lose a substantial share of skin collagen in the first five years after menopause. That is a real, measurable change, and it is why collagen products are marketed to this group harder than any other.

The trial evidence is better than sceptics allow and much weaker than the advertising implies: small improvements in hydration and elasticity, measurable at eight to twelve weeks, in studies that are frequently funded by collagen manufacturers.

If you want to spend money on your skin in menopause, daily SPF and, where appropriate, a topical retinoid do more per pound than any drink. Collagen is a reasonable addition once those are in place.

    What to look for.

2.5-10g of hydrolysed peptides per serving
Below 2.5g you are under the studied dose. Check the serving, not the tub.
Vitamin C in the formula or your diet
Collagen synthesis requires it, so the pairing is genuinely sensible.
    Cost per day
Collagen ranges from about 40p to over £3 a day for the same 5-10g. The expensive end is buying you flavour and branding.

    What to ignore.

    Before-and-after photography
Lighting, makeup and hydration explain most of what you are looking at.
    Collagen as your protein source
It lacks tryptophan and is a poor-quality protein in isolation.
'Type I, II, III and V' as a selling point
More types listed does not mean better results for skin.

When a supplement is not the answer

If your skin has changed in a way that bothers you, the highest-value interventions are daily broad-spectrum SPF, not smoking, sleep, and a topical retinoid if suitable for you. Where menopausal symptoms are affecting you more broadly, systemic HRT has effects on skin as well as everything else, and that is a clinical conversation rather than a shopping one.

    Common questions.

    Does collagen help menopausal skin?

Trials show small improvements in hydration and elasticity at 2.5-10g daily over two to three months. It does not reverse the oestrogen-driven loss.

How much collagen should I take in menopause?

2.5-10g of hydrolysed peptides daily. Most skin studies sit at the lower end of that range.

Marine or bovine collagen for menopause?

No good head-to-head evidence favours either for skin. Choose on price and dietary preference.
