Creatine for women
Creatine is one of the few supplements that reliably works, and one of the easiest to overpay for. The right product costs pennies a day.
The context.
Creatine is among the best-evidenced supplements in existence, and the case for women in midlife is stronger than the case for most gym-goers: muscle and bone are lost faster around menopause, resistance training is the countermeasure, and creatine improves what that training produces.
The buying decision is unusually simple. You want plain creatine monohydrate, ideally with a purity mark such as Creapure, at 3-5g a day. Everything else in this category is packaging.
We have compared products on cost per 5g serving, because that is the only number that meaningfully separates them.

What to look for.
- Creatine monohydrate, nothing else
- HCl, buffered and liquid versions cost more and have no demonstrated advantage.
- A purity mark
- Creapure or an equivalent third-party purity certification.
- Cost per 5g serving
- Good unflavoured monohydrate lands around 10-25p a serving.
What to ignore.
- 'Creatine for women' formulations
- Same compound, smaller scoop, higher price. The physiology does not differ by sex.
- Loading phases
- Unnecessary. 3-5g daily saturates muscle in three to four weeks without the gut upset.
- Blends with token creatine
- A pre-workout containing 1g of creatine is not a creatine supplement.

When a supplement is not the answer
Creatine only does anything if you are training. If you are not currently doing resistance work two or three times a week, the powder will do very little and the training will do a great deal. Start there. If joint pain, fatigue or a health condition is what is stopping you, that is worth a clinical conversation rather than a purchase.
Speak to a clinicianCommon questions.
What is the best creatine for women?
Plain creatine monohydrate with a purity certification, at 3-5g a day. There is no meaningful benefit to sex-specific formulations.
Will creatine make me bulky?
No. It adds a small amount of water inside muscle cells, typically half a kilo to a kilo and a half, and supports strength gains from training.
Should women take creatine during menopause?
It is a reasonable choice if you are strength training, because muscle and bone loss accelerate in this period. The direct claims about menopausal brain fog and mood are not yet well evidenced.
