    Why this role exists

The diagnostic gender gap in autism is closing far too slowly. Girls who mask are described as shy, anxious or sensitive, and are assessed for everything except autism. Assessors who can see through camouflaging are rare and in real demand.

Who you would be looking after

Girls from age 12 and women through to their fifties, frequently with existing diagnoses of anxiety, eating disorders or emotionally unstable personality disorder that never quite fitted.

    A day in the diary

    • One full assessment a day, allowing for the pace this work needs
    • Structured collateral history, usually with a parent or long-term partner
    • Paid report time, with a fourteen working day turnaround
    • Monthly MDT with the neurodevelopmental team

    What the work involves

    • Deliver ADOS-2 and ADI-R informed assessments across the lifespan
    • Recognise camouflaging and internalised presentation rather than scoring against a male-normed picture
    • Distinguish autism from and alongside ADHD, PMDD and trauma responses
    • Write reports usable for education, workplace and healthcare adjustments

    What we ask for

    • HCPC or equivalent registration
    • ADOS-2 training and current diagnostic practice
    • Experience with female presentation specifically

    What you get

    • Longer assessment slots than the market standard
    • Post-diagnostic support pathway for every patient you diagnose
    • Peer review and second-opinion access

    What this pays, and why

Independent autism assessments are typically billed at £1,200 to £2,000 to the patient, with assessors receiving £350 to £600. Our band is higher because the assessment slot is longer and we expect the depth that requires.

    How hiring works here

    1. You send your details. No agency screening call before anyone clinical has read them.
    2. A clinician from the relevant pathway calls you within five working days.
    3. A working conversation about how you would handle two real cases.
    4. Registration and references checked, then a start date that works around your existing commitments.

Questions clinicians ask about this role

    Do you assess children?

From age 12 upwards. Younger paediatric assessment sits outside our current service.

    Is a second assessor involved?

For complex cases, yes. We fund a second opinion where the picture is unclear rather than pushing an uncertain conclusion.

    What happens after diagnosis?

Every diagnosed patient is offered post-diagnostic sessions and workplace or education adjustment support, so you are not writing a report into a void.
