What ADHD actually looks like in women.
Not the schoolboy stereotype. Six clusters most women recognise instantly - and almost none of them were on the checklist you were handed as a girl.
The six clusters.
01
Inattentive presentation
Zoning out mid-sentence. Reading the same paragraph five times. A browser with 40 tabs and none of them the one you need. Losing keys, phone, thread of the conversation. Being called 'away with the fairies' as a child.
02
Executive dysfunction
Knowing exactly what needs doing and being unable to start. Time blindness - 20 minutes and 3 hours feel identical. Chronic lateness paired with chronic over-preparation. Task paralysis over an unopened email.
03
Emotional dysregulation & RSD
Feedback that lands like a physical blow. Rehearsing a conversation for days. A small perceived rejection tipping the whole day. Emotions that arrive at full volume with no dimmer switch.
04
Masking & perfectionism
Overachievement that costs everything behind the scenes. A rehearsed 'normal' voice. Cancelling plans because the performance is exhausting. Being described as 'so together' by people who have never seen your kitchen.
05
Cyclical worsening
Symptoms that sharpen in the week before your period, ease after it, and shift again in perimenopause. Focus and mood tracking your hormones more closely than anyone told you they would.
06
Sensory & sleep
Clothing labels, fluorescent lights, background noise - all louder than they should be. A brain that won't switch off at night and won't switch on in the morning. Sleep debt as a permanent condition.
What it's not.
It isn't laziness. It isn't a lack of intelligence. It isn't a character flaw you can willpower your way out of, and it isn't something you invented after seeing a TikTok.
It's a neurodevelopmental difference in how attention, reward, and emotional regulation are wired - one that presents differently in women, is under-studied in women, and is routinely missed in women.

Common questions.
What are the most common ADHD symptoms in adult women?
Inattention, executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity, chronic overwhelm, and cyclical worsening around the menstrual cycle or perimenopause. Hyperactivity, when present, is often internal - a racing mind rather than a restless body.
How is ADHD different in women than in men?
Women are more likely to present with the inattentive subtype, to internalise hyperactivity, and to mask symptoms socially. The result is that ADHD in women is more often mistaken for anxiety, depression, or a personality trait - and diagnosed decades later.
Can ADHD symptoms get worse with age?
Yes. The perimenopausal drop in oestrogen removes a dopamine buffer that had been doing invisible work, and many women experience a sharp worsening in focus, memory, and emotional regulation in their 40s.
